Acute heart slice for in vitro electrophysiology - Assessment of drug effects in pharmacology and toxicology
Extracellular recordings from acute slices have become a useful and reliable method for the assessment of drug effects on electrical activity in the mammalian heart.
This method is suitable for pharmacological studies of heart function-related compounds as well as toxicological studies in safety pharmacology.
The workshop will focus on the preparation of acute slices from mammalian heart tissue, slice maintenance and extracellular recording techniques.
In addition to data aquisition techniques, strategies for data analysis will also be discussed.

Workshop 2:
Acute brain slices for in vitro electrophisiology - Field potentials in normal and pathological brain functions
Extracellular field potentials constitute a straightforward measure of local neuronal activity that allows monitoring acute as well as long-term modifications in the normal, the developing and the pathological brain.
The analysis of field potetials can be used to determine drug effects, use-dependent information processing modifications and consequences of genetic manipulations.
The workshop will focus on the preparation of brain slices, extracellular recording and drug application techniques and the induction of synaptic plasticity.
In addition to data aquisition techniques, strategies for data analysis will also be discussed.

Workshop 3:
Acute brain slices for in vitro electrophysiology - Voltammetric and amperometric measurement of transmitter release
A quantitative measure for the release of neurotransmitzters in response to afferent stimulation or to pharmacological manipulation can be achieved by voltammetry and/or amperometry.
Using highly sensitive microelectrodes voltammetric and amperometric techniques allow determing the temporal profile of transmitter release directly at the release site with hight spatial resolution.
The workshop will focus on the preparation of brain slices, extracellular recording and drug application techniques and the use of voltammetric and amperometric recording techniques.
In addition to data aquisition techniques, strategies for data analysis will also be discussed.
